Local Involvement Update

by Ron Davis on February 14, 2009

A lot has happened with me politically since my last update here.  I’ll hit them here briefly.

First, last week I became Precinct Chairman of my precinct for the Republican Party.  I’m still figuring out what that involves, but so far it appears that it’ll be a great way for me to get involved on the local political scene.  There’s a county convention next month, and then a district convention after that.

Then today at the Paulding Republicans meeting, I officially joined the local party.  I figured that if I’m going to be a Precinct Chairman, I should be an actual member of the party.  I was planning to join anyway, but the chairman thing gave me the final nudge that I needed.

Today’s Paulding Republicans meeting featured State Senator Eric Johnson, who is campaigning to be Georgia’s next Lieutenant Governor. I was excited to hear what he had to say, because he’s the State Senator pushing for parents to have the right to send their kids to the school of their choice.

His current legislative submission isn’t perfect, but it’s a real start.  Georgia private schools do a better job educating children than the public schools, and on average do it for almost half the cost.  On top of that, parents who pay to send their children to private schools do so in addition to the taxes they already pay to support the public school system.

Overall, Johnson seems to have his head screwed on straight.  I’ll be looking into him a bit closer as his campaign continues, but I liked what he had to say, specifically about the school choice issue but also about fiscal responsibility and balanced government budgets.
