I just got home from our monthly Paulding County GOP meeting. I’ve made some good friends there in the Party, and it’s always good to see them. We always have a guest speaker, usually one who is running for office. Today’s speaker was one of the numerous candidates for Governor, John Oxendine.
I’ve been looking forward to this meeting for months. Oxendine is (somehow) the front runner in the race to replace Sonny Perdue, and I wanted to hear what he has to say. I was specifically anticipating a Q&A time, where I’d have the opportunity to ask him why he favors turning personal responsibility to the government in the name of family values and tradition (Sunday alcohol sales). Or if somebody beat me to that one, I would have liked to ask if his appearance on stage with Senators McCain, Isakson, Chambliss, and Graham last fall (at a Saxby Chambliss rally) was an open endorsement of big government Republican ideals. (Maybe he was just there out of obligation to the GOP…)
But no. It didn’t happen that way.
Oxendine’s speech had to be moved to the beginning of the meeting because he had to try to be in 3 places at once today. Oxendine got up and rambled through what was possibly the worst political speech I have ever heard (the guy makes George Bush look like a great orator), and then he quite literally bolted out the door before there could possibly be one question asked of him.
How did this guy become the front runner in this campaign? I didn’t care much for Karen Handel when she came to speak to us, but at least she was well composed and had an actual speech with actual points. If you are planning on voting for John Oxendine, you need to give serious consideration to the other people in the race, even though you may not be familiar with their names. Every other candidate on the ballot is a better choice than John Oxendine.
Here are the other candidates in this race (listed alphabetically, with links to their web sites). Please make sure you are well educated on the candidates before you vote in the primary election. Any of these people would be a better choice for Governor than John Oxendine:
I’m still undecided on my choice in this race, but today John Oxendine helped me narrow the choice a little bit. Give these other folks serious consideration. I know it’s easy to walk into the voting booth and vote for the name you recognize the most. Don’t do that. Educate yourself on these candidates, because blindly voting for John Oxendine would be blindly voting for the worst candidate on the ballot.

Ditto.
I could knot agree with you more on your comments regarding John Oxendine! I saw him speak several weeks ago along with the other candidates at the Faith and Freedom Coalitions rally in Duluth. I was amased at how unprepared he appeared to be. He rambled through an agonizing speech which had very little to do with his vision for our state. After he finished, he bolted from the room and spoke to noone in the audience. Austin scott seemed to be the only one willing to hang around and answer everyones questions until we all had a chance to speak with him. My friends and I left the rally knowing who we would be supporting in the Republican primary. Austin had a clear understanding of the issues we face and appeared ready to challenge those issues head on. I hope your readers will take your sound advice and research the other candidates. I also hope they will agree our great state will be in good hands with Austin Scott as our new Governor.
John Oxendine is a joke. He’s the Republican version of Obama in the fact that he has no real substantial policy and no real record of achievement. Obama never opened his mouth without mentioning “hope” and “change.” Likewise, Oxendine never opens his without mentioning Ronald Reagan and the FairTax; he turns a great legacy and a great hope into empty buzzwords.
Furthermore, his policies aren’t well-thought-out. His water policy consists of digging a few new reservoirs in North Georgia. That’s fine, but how does he plan to fill them? To say nothing of the farmers in South Georgia who need water.
If you ask me, I think part of the reason he’s leading in the polls is name recognition: you can’t pump gas without seeing his name.
I just found your blog today and really enjoy it! Keep up the great work.
I’m glad that people are starting to recognize that Ox is not the best choice for governor. He may claim to be a Republican, but he is by no means a Conservative. The only true Conservative on the ballot is Ray McBerry. Ray is a states’ rights, 10th amendment supporter. When he speaks, he addresses all issues and makes time to answer your questions. He has a specific plan in place for Georgia and knows where this state needs to go in order to get the radical federal government out of our pocketbooks and our lives. He’s not just another pawn like Perdue or Oxendine. Check out http://www.georgiafirst.org to read about Ray’s agenda and when you can hear him speak in your local area.
Oxendine does not favor alcohol sales on Sunday. “Republicans are supposed to be the party of family values. Where is the value in selling alcohol on the Lord’s Day? Oxendine asked.

“Was an open endorsement of big government Republican ideals.” Seriously?
And are you suggesting he is a bad choice for governor because he didn’t have a Q&A session at your meeting? Really?
Melissa, thanks for stopping by.
My problem with the Sunday sales issue is that Oxendine favors legislating morality and family values in the place of personal freedom.
On the endorsement of big government Republican ideals, he was being celebrated on a stage with Saxby Chambliss, Johnny Isakson, Lindsey Graham, and John McCain. I don’t know what else that could have been (other than, as I said, an obligation to the GOP).
On the Q&A, no, I’m not saying he’s a bad choice because he didn’t have a Q&A session. I’m saying I was disappointed that he didn’t have a Q&A session because I had questions that I would have liked to ask him.
I’m saying he’s a bad choice for Governor because he stands for more government and less freedom.
Not to mention he comes from a family of liars and cheats!!! His niece Keleigh and my now soon to be ex husband Ken Walls have been cought having an affair! They seem to condone this behavior!!! Not to mention wife beating and drug abuse… Oh yeah His family sure has my vote!!!!
