Last week, I went with my friend Shane to a rally for Saxby Chambliss. I’m still undecided in that Senate runoff race (though I’m leaning one way), but I wanted to hear what Chambliss had to say. Also, John McCain was going to be there, and even though I’m no big fan of his either, I figured it would be cool to go see him speak as well.

The rally was mostly a big pep rally for the GOP. Zell Miller spoke; Johnny Isakson spoke; Saxby Chambliss spoke, and then John McCain spoke. People cheered. Then we went home. There wasn’t much to it.

What really frustrated me was that the room full of politicians insisting we be fiscally conservative was led by four Senators (McCain, Chambliss, Isakson, Graham) who voted for the big $700 billion bailout rescue bill. That’s like a group of rapists selling mace to women. Is this what “conservative” has become?

McCain briefly criticized the Bush administration for letting spending get out of control, but then he said we need to cut taxes and expand military spending. I’m all for properly funding our military, but if we’re already in deficit spending and we lower the government’s income (cut taxes) and increase spending, how does that help us get spending under control?

Let’s fund the military, but let’s make some big, drastic changes in our spending. Minor cuts won’t do it; we need real fiscal reform. We need representatives who will demand fiscal responsibility.

That brings me back to the Georgia Senate runoff election. I’ve got to choose between Jim Martin, a foaming-at-the-mouth liberal who can’t finish a sentence without using the word “Obama” or the phrase “middle class,” and Saxby Chambliss, a self-declared conservative who spent the last 6 years in Washington expanding government and serving special interests. That’s not much of a choice.

At least I’ve still got 2 weeks to decide.
